In terms of circulation I decided to maintain the existing path through the complex in the N/S direction and limiting the new number of secure checkpoints to only one additional checkpoint. With this move I was able to funnel students between the existing basketball courts and my addition through a open communal space allowing them to see all of what the gym has to offer. In addition, I worked to group the non-secure spaces (member services, classrooms, etc.) in an area that was accessible from the parking lot and grouped in a block that had similar program and hvac needs.

Once in the fitness area of my project the space showcases a 3 story atrium in which the rock wall is housed, this wall would be a replica of a portion of Stone Mountain located 3 hours from our campus allowing students to connect with the area around them. At the top of this atrium is a clearstory skylight in which students who reach the top of the wall can have views of east campus and the surroundings.

By responding to the curve of the street on the northeast side I was able to create an exterior terraced courtyard, and bring students around to the main entrance.

For this project we were prompted to design a 100,000+ SF complex to replace a portion of the existing Carmichael Gym on the central campus of NC State University.

This project was composed of three main sectors; office space, classroom space, and workout space. A goal for the University was to limit the added number of secure checkpoints in order to maintain security within the complex, give views of the gym ammendities both existing and those which would be added, and maintain a corridor through the complex for students passing from north campus to the south of the gym.
