During the summer of 2015 I had the chance of working with a small design build firm in downtown Pittsburgh. While at Shelton Design/Build I was able to work on many parts of multiple projects from design development to construction documents. One of my first projects at Shelton was creating a proposal for a site just outside of the heart of Pittsburgh for 13 homes through a small design competition.

Working at a small firm like this helped me to get good, hands on experience in the field, while being able to touch many part of a project. It also gave me a look at how a firm functions, and what it takes to complete day-to-day tasks from a management point of view.

During this experience I was able to develop my craft of presentation materials. While I worked with many parts of projects, my focus was on rendering and marketing materials.

Another great benefit of working at a design build firm is the experience I was able to get on-site. During my time over the summer I was able to work on site with the crew and see how a project is built, and what the culture was like on site.
